Drawing some 150 signups, the Advanced Manufacturing Summit marked the conclusion of New Mexico’s 7th annual Manufacturing Day. Topping the list of favorite events was the summit’s “Live White Hat Hack,” a real-time IT hacking demo that clearly illustrated vulnerabilities inherent in manufacturing processes that utilize artificial intelligence and other computerized controls. Survey respondents indicated that a close second was innovation expert Greg Satell’s keynote presentation on how to embrace innovation as a method to overcoming disruption.
A student tour of AerSale in Roswell exposed some 90 students from two high schools to repairs and parts manufacturing at the Roswell airport. The kids, many of whom had never been on an airplane, got to board an Airbus that was on the tarmac and took turns viewing the cockpit and learning about the controls. Their excitement could be seen and heard, and the tour’s impact was undeniable.
Making a clear case for tour-host involvement, Continental Machining of Albuquerque brought down the house by near-filling three consecutive tours. The company took an active role in sending invitations to their distribution lists, and that effort paid off in spades.
