San Juan Closet Works is a custom closet company specializing in storage and organization solutions for residential and business settings. They specialize in working closely with their customers to develop creative, customized solutions for all of their organizational needs including closets, home offices, pantries, garages, craft rooms, laundry rooms, multi-function rooms and Murphy wall beds. All storage systems are designed and built at their manufacturing facility in Farmington, New Mexico.
Mr. Tom Gibbons, owner of San Juan Closet Works, is on his third career. However, San Juan Closet Works is his first privately owned business. Beginning as a one-man show, Mr. Gibbons has improved and strengthened his administrative and strategic plan to grow and eventually exit his business in order to search for his next career.
Having had no employees for many years, Mr. Gibbons handled all the aspects of his business from sales and customer relations to builder and installer. His passion, however, is in working with his customers to create unique storage solutions in all areas of their home or business. Part of his business success is due to accessing business resources like the Small Business Development Center at San Juan College Enterprise Center and local business networking, groups to keep his business moving forward.
Over the previous five years, New Mexico MEP has created a relationship, which led to a road map for the company to grow sales, purchase equipment, streamline day-to-day operations and develop an exit strategy. Some of those efforts include the expansion to a larger shop and the development of systems that San Juan Closet Works uses in their daily operations, such as creating checklists that detail everything needed for a given job. On the administrative side of operations, NM MEP helped Mr. Gibbons leverage the capabilities of QuickBooks. NM MEP also helped improve the organization of the shop floor in conjunction with facilitating the implementation of his current inventory tracking system.
The improvements San Juan Closet Works has made has helped them grow by 100% over the last four years, resulting in a bigger, more organized shop and the hiring of a new, skilled employee who has designed several tools for poka-yoke — a Japanese term for mistake-proofing. San Juan Closet Works has increased efficiency and continues to maintain high quality workmanship and extreme customer satisfaction. The company’s recent acquisition of a trailer provides an easier and more efficient build and install process to the operation. The company has increased visibility with a new logo and website featuring customers testimonials.
“Long standing professional relationship with MEP has developed into a strong working relationship and a team member. MEP helped me streamline my custom closet and organization operations. San Juan Closet Works has grown and many successes have been created.” – Tom Gibbons, Owner, www.sanjuanclosetworks.com
