The New Mexico Economic Development Department, in collaboration with the New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership, is offering New Mexico 9000 training classes to prepare New Mexico businesses for ISO 9001 Certification.
New Mexico 9000 was created by the Economic Development Department to provide training and assistance to New Mexico businesses in preparing for ISO 90001:2008. Training will be broken into six half-day sessions over a 3-6 month period.
“This is a great opportunity for New Mexico businesses to access new customers, become more efficient and lower their operating costs,” said Jon Barela, New Mexico Economic Development Cabinet Secretary.
The New Mexico 9000 training program has been completed by 155 companies, creating over 1,000 new expansion jobs.
Trained professionals will conduct ISO 9001:2008 classes in:
ISO is a general Quality Management System. Companies like INTEL, Boeing and many other companies are requiring that their first tier suppliers be ISO 9001 certified. In turn, those suppliers are requiring that their suppliers are ISO 9000 certified. In addition, government agencies, such as the Department of Defense, NASA and NNSA are also requiring ISO certification of their providers.
ISO 9000 standards have been adopted by 178 countries. There are now more than 1 million companies worldwide that have registered to the ISO standards. Costs associated with obtaining, maintaining, and renewing ISO registration are tax deductible.
The cost of the New Mexico 9000 training classes is based on annual company sales revenue, ranging from $550 to $3,300 for the training.
The study, conducted by the Manufacturing Performance Institute, finds that this is a critical point in time for U.S. manufacturing, and manufacturers must assess whether they have the workforce, business systems, equipment and strategies in place to successfully compete in the future. While external factors, like the economic downturn present challenges, manufacturers can remain competitive by focusing on six strategies assessed by the NGM Study as a blueprint for success.
This workshop is designed for engineers, designers, drafters, machinists, inspectors, manufacturing, quality engineers, students or any others interested in a greater understanding of engineering drawings with GD&T specifications.
This lively and informative workshop will cover the Fundamentals of GD&T based on the newly released ASME Y14.5 -2009 standard. The new standard simply clarifies and enhances many topics already in the existing ASME Y14.5M-1994 presently used in many companies today.
With a basic understanding of print reading, the attendees will be introduced to rules and terminology of GD&T as well as the symbols and their applications in this unique engineering language. They will be able to apply these concepts to their projects immediately after the first day of instruction. There are many examples and workshop exercises to test the participant’s skills.
To achieve the objectives listed above, this workshop provides many exercises and applications problems which ties the “textbook theory” to real world applications.
Students may also bring drawings that can be used for classroom discussions as time permits. Please bring a pencil and calculator.
The Instructor: Anthony (Tony) Cimabue has over 38 years experience as a Senior Tool and Mechanical Designer which includes 16 years as a design/drawing checker, GD&T specialist and trainer. Tony graduated with a BS in Industrial Technology – Mechanical Design from Colorado State University–Pueblo and a AAS in Tool Design and Machining Technology from Pennsylvania College of Technology.
He developed his skills and expertise while employed at: Dana Corp, Gates Rubber Company, IBM, TRW Space Systems and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Tony was a part-time faculty member at the University of New Mexico at Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico College providing instruction in Mechanical Drafting, Print Reading, GD&T, and Measurement and Inspection Practices for the Machinist Apprenticeship Program sponsored by the Los Alamos National Lab.
Tony is founder of Tech-Knowledgy for Design and Manufacturing LLC which provides training and consulting in print reading and engineering drawing standards, GD&T, and also provides drawing checking services for his clients. He is also a senior trainer for Technical Consultants Inc., a world premier GD&T training and consulting firm. Tony is an ASME Senior Level GD&T Professional and regularly attends the ASME Y14.5 (Dimensioning and Tolerancing) Committee meetings. He was also a past member of the ASME Y14.5.2 Certification Committee.

When Clovis-based Leslie Candy Co. was purchased by Greg Southard in 2002, the 50-year-old company was using trusted manufacturing processes and recipes to create peanut patties, brittles and haystacks for distribution to supermarkets, convenience stores and specialty boutiques throughout the United States.
Southard invited New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership into the organization to review how things were flowing on the manufacturing floor.
Today, Southard still uses the company’s savory recipes and traditional cooking methods, but he now runs a lean shop with streamlined operations.
“New Mexico MEP came in, watched our processes and provided feedback and solutions,” said Southard. “Based on their recommendation, we implemented an incentive program for our frontline employees, which resulted in a production increase of 25 percent, while lowering overall operating costs. New Mexico MEP helped us to look at our processes in a new way,” he said.
New Mexico MEP is a nonprofit organization that helps businesses increase profitability. Serving businesses throughout the state from its offices in Albuquerque, Roswell, Farmington and Las Cruces, New Mexico MEP brings together experts in government, not-for-profit organizations and industry to offer resources that help companies become more competitive.
Based on the premise that a lean operation is a profitable operation, New Mexico MEP helps key staff understand the principles of lean manufacturing. It offers workshops, on-site trainings and systems analyses.
Southard’s Leslie Candy Co. benefitted from applying Value Stream Mapping to its manufacturing operation. VSM creates a visual map of existing operations – the route that raw materials take to become a finished product – and compares it to a map of how things could be done more efficiently. It helps participants analyze a business’ manufacturing system to identify redundancy and waste, and determines the tools needed to implement improvements. Starting with the way a company acquires its raw materials, VSM seeks to shorten the time it takes products to get to consumers.
Value Stream Mapping is also used in administrative settings to eliminate unnecessary paperwork and processes. The same principles, when applied to a front office or bookkeeping department, can put the focus back on the customer by incorporating lean concepts.
Besides efficiency trainings, New Mexico MEP offers classes that teach supervisors how to relate to employees, including how to motivate, resolve conflicts, reduce accidents, decrease equipment damage and increase product quality and quantity.
Businesses can also utilize the Partnership for Success program, a free Internet-based library and email subscription service that provides technical background and business information.
